About Gremlin Radio

How It All Started

Back in 2000, I was searching for a good online breaks station—but there just weren’t any out there. At the time, I was working a day job as a CAD drafter at an engineering company and DJing on weekends. To get through the workday, I’d bring in CDs to play at my desk.

Every morning, I’d pick out about five discs that matched my mood. But a few hours later, I’d always want something different—faster, harder, more energetic music, especially on Fridays. Soon, I gave up and just started lugging my entire 300-disc aluminum CD case into the office. That’s when I became “that guy”—the one walking in every day with a metal suitcase full of music. It didn’t take long before I realized I needed a better solution.

The Tech Geek Solution

The idea hit me: What if I could stream my music from home over the internet? That way, I wouldn’t need to carry my collection around.

After a little research, I discovered Winamp and its ability to broadcast music online. With my blazing-fast 128K cable internet (which was considered decent at the time), I had just enough bandwidth to stream one or two low-quality connections.

Being a tech geek, I dove in. I ripped my CDs, set up the stream, and—boom—I had my own personal internet radio station. Later, I even added features like a request system so I could control playback remotely. It wasn’t built for the masses, but it solved my problem and gave me a new passion.

Spreading the Addiction

Once I had my station running, I wanted to share it. I built a small webpage and grabbed a free domain name: djgremlin.mine.nu. It wasn’t flashy, but it made me official—I was online, and Gremlin Radio was born.

Like most hobbies, it didn’t take long before it needed more resources. I subscribed to my first hosted stream server so I could support more listeners (instead of just two slots from my home connection). That was a game-changer and allowed the audience to grow.

By 2002, I had regular listeners tuning in. In September of that year, I made it official and launched GremlinRadio.com. From that moment, the station was on the map—and it’s been going strong ever since.

Today & Beyond

What started as one person’s solution has grown into a global online radio station. Gremlin Radio now streams 24/7, featuring live DJs, exclusive mixes, and nonstop breaks, breakbeat, and dance music for listeners all over the world.

We’ve gone from one guy with a CD suitcase and a slow cable modem to a thriving online community of music lovers, DJs, and fans who keep the energy alive.

Gremlin Radio is still fueled by the same passion it began with—sharing the music we love and connecting people through sound.

How GremlinRadio Started

The Start

“That Guy”

I started streaming around 2000 because I couldn’t find a good breaks station online. There are more nowadays, but back then there weren’t many options at all.

At the time, I was a desk jockey by day (and a disc jockey on the weekends), working at an engineering company doing CAD drafting. I used to bring CDs to work so I’d have something to listen to. Every morning, I’d pick out about five CDs that fit my mood. That worked fine for the first couple of hours, but I quickly realized my taste shifted as the day went on. A few hours later, when I was more awake, I wanted faster, harder music—especially on Fridays. TGIF!

So I thought, “Why not just bring in my whole CD case?” That case was an aluminum suitcase holding about 300 CDs. For a week or two, I lugged it into the office, but pretty soon people started looking at me funny. I was that guy—the one with the giant suitcase of CDs. It was awkward, and I knew I needed a better solution.

“Tech Geek”

Then I had an idea: what if I could just listen to my music over the internet from home? That way, I wouldn’t be the oddball with a metal suitcase full of CDs.

After a little research, I discovered people were using Winamp to stream music. The software setup was simple, and back then I had cable internet with Excite@Home. Of course, speeds were much slower in those days—my outgoing bandwidth was only 128K. That wasn’t much, but it was enough to stream to one or two people at low quality.

Being the tech geek I am, I thought this would be a fun experiment. So I ripped a bunch of my CDs, set up a stream, and whammy!—I had my own personal internet radio station. Eventually, I added features like a request system so I could control my songs remotely. It wasn’t built for a crowd, but it worked great for me and solved my problem.

“Spreading the Addiction”

My personal station worked so well that I decided to share it with friends. I put together a simple webpage and grabbed one of those free domain names so people could find me online: djgremlin.mine.nu. It wasn’t the coolest name, but it worked.

At that point, I was official—I was online. I was Gremlin Radio.

But like any hobby, it needed money. Around the same time, I paid for my first stream server host so I could support more listeners. With my home setup, I could only allow one or two streams at a time. The hosted server changed that completely and let me grow an audience.

After about a year, I had a steady group of listeners. That’s when I decided to go big and grab my own domain name. In September 2002, GremlinRadio.com officially went live—and it’s been running ever since.

Where did GremlinRadio Go?

An Apology to Our Gremlin Radio Fans

To all of our loyal listeners and supporters: We owe you an apology and an explanation.

Gremlin Radio has always been built on passion and a love for the music, but over the past couple of years, we’ve faced some major setbacks that kept us from delivering what you deserve.

In 2023, a massive server failure wiped out our entire setup, our station website, broadcaster, tracks, files, and more. After months of working to recover the data, we discovered the process had failed, and we were forced to start over from scratch.

Then in 2024, just as we were rebuilding, disaster struck again. An outage and hard drive crash destroyed our progress, crushing the hard work we had put in to bring Gremlin Radio back online.

We know how disappointing this was for our community. We felt the same heartbreak, but we never gave up.

Now, in 2025, we’ve made big changes to ensure Gremlin Radio has the stability it deserves. The website is now hosted securely in the cloud, and our stream runs on a local server with a far more reliable internet connection. These changes mean better uptime, stronger performance, and fewer risks of losing everything again.

We are truly sorry for the downtime and the silence. But today, we’re excited to say that GremlinRadio.com is back—stronger than ever—bringing you “The Best in Club Breaks and More.”

We hope you’ll continue to support us, spread the word, and keep the vibe alive. This station exists because of you, and together, we’re making sure it never goes dark again.

With gratitude and renewed energy,

The Gremlin Radio Team
